Search engines tweak and update their algorithms on a daily basis, but there are some things that are static and don’t look like they will be changing in the near future. The purpose of SEO is to show search engines what you veterinary practice is all about. During the search engine optimization process, there are five common mistakes veterinarians can make which negatively affect search rankings. These five mistakes are: duplicate content, keyword stuffing, no content, link farming, and outdated content. Duplicate content refers to any text that is copied from another source on the internet. Veterinary practices can get into trouble by “borrowing” content directly from a competitor, vendor, or veterinary technology manufacturer. What veterinarians often don’t know is that copying one’s own content can be just as bad. Reusing the same veterinary content on a web page, a blog, and a press release is considered duplicate content when it comes to SEO.
For SEO purposes, it’s common to include relevant veterinary keywords in written content. However, where keywords are concerned, less is always more. Veterinarians can negatively impact SEO by stuffing a 500 word content piece with 30 occurrences of a certain veterinary keyword. Not only does it make the text bad from a pet owner’s perspective, it also hurts rankings.
Since SEO should create a great experience for a pet owner, a veterinary website or blog with little to no content creates a bad experience and thus hurts SEO. A veterinary practice’s website with one paragraph of information is of no use to a pet owner and will likely have a high bounce rate. When pet owners (users) think a website is bad, search engines do as well.
A link farm is a website or a collective of websites designed to provide inbound links to other sites. Although relevant, useful links are great for SEO, link farms are typically unrelated, sham websites that have no actual authority on the topic. Never buy links or use link farms since it will always negatively impact your SEO and rankings.
A veterinary website that has outdated or stale content create a bad user experience. On the opposite side, websites with fresh, current content creates a great experience and often rank higher. Websites with blogs are the easiest to update, attract more pet owners, and positively contribute to SEO.
If you have inadvertently made any of these mistakes, don’t panic; it can be corrected. It may take a little bit of time to correct, but the benefits will show in your rankings.
