Pet Health and Vaccines: Critical for Lifetime Health

Vaccinations are not only safe and effective; they are an important and fundamental piece of your pet’s preventative healthcare plan.

Faithful Friends Animal Hospital’s vaccination protocol follows American Veterinary Medical Association guidelines and is carefully tailored to the lifestyle and particular health needs of your pet. Beyond the core vaccines—rabies, distemper, Bordetella, FeLV, etc.—we also offer a vaccine to protect your pet from a rattlesnake bite.

For our clients that are welcoming a new puppy or kitten into the family, we offer a discount for the first year’s series of vaccines. We recommend that these be given at 8, 12, and 16 weeks. We also offer discounted puppy and kitten wellness packages that include the full series of vaccines and basic deworming.

In all, our veterinarians truly believe that our carefully balanced approach is the best means to prevent infectious disease and the possibility of your pet having an adverse reaction to a vaccine.

Microchipping/ Lost Pet ID

Does your pet have a microchip? Each year, millions of pets go missing and many don't make it back home. Microchipping your pet is a safe, simple and effective way to prevent this tragedy. About the size of a grain of rice, identification microchips are encoded with your pet’s vital information and implanted beneath your pet’s skin, usually between the shoulder blades.

Veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country and around the world are equipped with special scanners capable of reading these microchips. The information in the chip is used to reunite you with your pet.

Faithful Friends Animal Hospital in Colorado Springs uses the HomeAgain microchip system. HomeAgain provides a number of very useful services to pet owners such as their National Pet Recovery Database, Lost Pet Specialists, Rapid Lost Pet Alerts, Lost Pet Medical Insurance, Travel Assistance for Found Pets, and more.

Care for Your Senior Pet

Dogs and cats in their senior years may have slowed down a bit, but they are no less important members of our families. However, changes to their bodies occur rapidly and they become more susceptible to diseases such as cancer, arthritis, dental disease, diabetes, and heart disease.

This is why we recommend a geriatric exam tailored to your pet’s age and condition. Our senior wellness program includes a range of packages designed to catch problems associated with aging before they become difficult and expensive to treat. Our packages provide increased levels of care and are recommended based on the age and care needs of your pet.

After your pet reaches age seven, your veterinarian will talk to you about how we can help ensure your pet’s senior years are the best years of his or her life.

Internal Medicine

If your pet becomes ill or you suspect there may be something wrong with him or her, we can provide diagnostic and medical care for a number of internal medicine conditions. These services include endocrinology (e.g. diabetes and related diseases), allergy consultations and treatment, gastrointestinal disease, renal and hepatic conditions, dermatology, and others.

We also believe that it is important to educate you regarding your pet’s condition and treatment options. We are more than willing to take the time to provide you with a full understanding of the tests being performed, your pet’s condition and recommendations for treatment.

Cold Laser Therapy

To further reduce pain and promote healing after an injury, surgery or to help treat a number of medical conditions, we offer Cold Light Laser Therapy. This is a medical treatment that uses low-level lasers to stimulate the natural healing capabilities of the body’s cells. This form of laser therapy is effective at promoting healing on a cellular level as well as decreasing inflammation after surgery, injury or areas of the body affected by chronic conditions such as arthritis.

Behavioral & Nutritional Counseling

Behavioral Counseling

Behavior problems are the number one reason that owners give up a pet. Faithful Friends Animal Hospital offers behavior counseling for many of your pet’s problems including inappropriate urination or defecation, aggression, separation anxiety, inappropriate chewing and barking, introduction of new pets into the household and household pets that are in conflict with one another. Oftentimes a behavior problem, such as inappropriate voiding, can be linked to a medical issue (cystitis, bladder stones, and kidney disease).

Our Colorado Springs veterinarians will help you recognize, validate and categorize behavior problems and work closely with you in developing a specific plan to help eliminate your pet’s unwanted behavior. If our veterinarians and technical staff members cannot help with your pet's behavior problem, we can refer you to a board-certified animal behaviorist.

Nutritional Counseling for Your Pet

One of the key factors contributing to the improved health and longevity of companion animals is our expanded knowledge on the important role that proper nutrition plays in overall health. During your pet’s comprehensive physical examination we evaluate his or her body condition and give recommendations based on what we see. However, some pets with nutritional issues or chronic conditions such as diabetes require a little bit more intervention, which may include specialized foods, feeding strategies and even prescription diets.

Faithful Friends Animal Hospital has trained staff available to help you with your pet’s nutritional challenges. We can also offer advice and provide information about diets that benefit specific medical conditions such as liver disease, bladder and kidney stones, renal failure, food allergies, diabetes and other conditions.

If we believe a prescription diet is in your pet’s best interests, we carry a diverse inventory of these foods and can also order a wide range of prescription diets and nutritional supplements for you.

Our Pharmacy

In numerous acute or chronic conditions, medication is required to cure illness or alleviate symptoms. At Faithful Friends Animal Hospital we believe that timely and convenient access to these medications is an important aspect of caring for your pet. For this reason, we maintain a comprehensive pharmacy.

Not only does our pharmacy mean you don’t have to wait for important medicines for your pet, but there is a direct line of communication between the examination room and the pharmacy window. Each medication becomes part of your pet's medical record, which reduces the chance for errors and enhances our ability to monitor its use and the outcome for your pet.

Refills are easy too. Simply give us a call and we can have them ready when you request it.

Specialist Referrals

If your pet’s best interest is served by referral to a specialist for care, your veterinarian will make that recommendation. After a determination is made, we will work with you to find a specialist that meets your pet’s unique needs and then coordinate communication between our facility and the specialist. Not only is it important that they receive necessary medical information from us before your pet is treated, but we must receive test results, diagnosis, and recommendations from the specialist in order to ensure continuity of care.

In most cases, we refer clients to local veterinary specialists, but in some instances we will refer to specialist in the Denver area as well as Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Generally, we refer root canals, total hip replacements, complicated orthopedic procedures, and complicated neurologic and internal medicine cases to specialists.
