August 26th of each year is National Dog Day in the United States; this special holiday has been celebrated since 2004 and is meant to honor all dogs—big and small, mixed breed and purebred. The idea behind this holiday is that all dogs deserve to be celebrated—especially those that put their lives on the line as police K9s, rescue dogs, and service dogs on a daily basis. Here at Dr. Nina's Animal Hospital, National Dog Day is one of our favorite days of the year!
Whether you have a dog of your own or just love dogs in general, there are plenty of ways you can go about celebrating National Dog Day.
If you have a dog of your own, consider scheduling a day of fun and pampering (if your dog is into that!). Take him or her to a local dog park, go for a walk, or let your dog indulge in its favorite snack. If your pup is looking a little scraggly, consider scheduling an appointment to have him or her groomed. Or, simply pick up a few new toys for your dog from your local pet store. If you want to celebrate the holiday on a larger scale, consider holding a "pooch party" at your home, inviting your friends' and neighbors' dogs to participate as well!
What if you don't have a dog? No worries; you can still celebrate. Consider volunteering to walk dogs at your local shelter, or donating supplies to a local rescue group. Volunteer to foster a dog in need, or consider adopting a dog of your very own! If a friend or family member has a dog, why not send them a new dog toy or other gift?
National Dog Day is also a great time to bring your own dog in for a wellness exam with our Parrish veterinarian. Dr. Nina's Animal Hospital proudly serves Sarasota and Parrish Florida and the surrounding areas, so give us a call to schedule your dog's appointment today.
How will you celebrate National Dog Day this year?
